About the club

The Debate Society (DebSoc) at RVCE (R.V. College of Engineering) is one of the prominent student organizations at the institution, dedicated to fostering a culture of public speaking and debate. It serves as a platform for students to sharpen their oratory, communication, and critical thinking skills. The society hosts intra-college debates, group discussions, and workshops on various topics, ranging from current affairs to global issues, economics and International Relations, to Artificial Intelligence and Philosophy, providing students with opportunities to engage in intellectual exchanges. These activities help participants gain confidence in articulating their thoughts clearly and persuasively.

DebSoc also plays an active role in representing RVCE at inter-college and national debating competitions. Members of the society often compete in prestigious events, such as parliamentary debates, and other public speaking contests, where they can showcase their talents and gain exposure. In addition to competitive events, the society emphasizes leadership and teamwork, helping members develop both individual speaking abilities and the collaborative skills necessary for team debates. Through its various initiatives, the Debate Society at RVCE continues to nurture a thriving community of eloquent speakers and confident debaters, empowering students to take on leadership roles in their academic and professional careers.

Milestones

Winners & Breakers at Major Tournaments – Consistent top performances at national circuits like ABP, NALSAR, and Sambhashan, with multiple teams breaking into knockout rounds.
International Representation – Represented India at the 13th All-Asian Debating Championship (Langkawi, Malaysia), where both teams advanced to the knockout stages, a first for an engineering college.
Flagship Event – RVDT (R.V. Debating Tournament) – One of South India’s leading debating tournaments, organised annually by DEBSOC, drawing participants from across the country.
Growing Community – Expanded to 70+ active members, hosting regular workshops and training sessions to mentor new debaters and adjudicators.
Campus & Social Impact – Recognised as RVCE’s most active literary club, promoting a culture of critical thinking, discourse, and public speaking through events, panels, and outreach.

Achievements

Over the course, RV Debating Society has achieved great heights internationally.

Won the ABP Championship, one of the world’s largest and most prestigious tournaments, in 2011. They are the first and only Indian team to have ever won this tournament, which was held in Bangladesh.

Won the NLS Championship, considered the most important tournament in India (x3 times).

Won Azim Premji Resolution Rally ‘24.

Won Rotary Yadalam Nanjaiah Setty Rolling Shield ‘25

Won Maria Phillip Debate ‘24

How to join the club

To join RV DebSoc, new members must participate in a 1v1-style debate round and current affairs quiz as part of the selection process. No prior experience is necessary, just enthusiasm, clarity of thought, and a willingness to engage in meaningful discussions! Keep an eye on our social media handles for recruitment announcements.
